BEIJING — A new mega-sized airport being built in China could shift the balance of power in the country's airline industry. Beijing's new 6-pier, radial-shaped airport was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It will cover an area of 313,000sqm. Flag carrier Air China dominates the current Beijing airport. Its regional rivals China Eastern Airlines control Shanghai, while China Southern Airlines hold Guangzhou. The new airport will allow China Eastern and China Southern a 40 percent share of passengers each, which may encourage the two provincial airlines to open lucrative new North American routes, Bloomberg reported. "There are demands to add hundreds of flights in Beijing every day that get refused because we're running out of resources," Liu Xuesong, general manager of Capital Airports Holding, the operator of Beijing's existing airport, told Bloomberg. The new airport is due to open in 2019 and will have a capacity of 100 million passengers a year. Liu told Bloomberg that the current Capital International Airport and the new airport together will handle 170 million passengers annually with their seven runways by 2025. Industry experts worry the expansion will result in heavy air traffic as only about 20 percent of China's airspace is open to civilian flights. China is known for flight delays. Its big three airlines were ranked the least punctual of the world's major carriers last year. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. China has unveiled its first large passenger aircraft to be made on home soil. One of China's state-owned plane manufacturers has produced the plane in a Chinese initiative to compete in the market for large passenger jets. China is one of the world's biggest aviation markets but currently relies on Boeing and Airbus aircraft. The new C919 was rolled out at a ceremony attended by some 4,000 government officials and other guests at a hangar near Shanghai's International Airport. The consortium in charge of operating and managing the Larnaca and Paphos airports, HERMES Airports Ltd, has confirmed reports that it is negotiating a sizeable investment involving the construction of exhibition showrooms and a logistical services centre at the old Larnaca airport with a large chinese company which was not named as the discussions are private and not finalized yet. The investment under discussion will be one of the largest investments ever made in Cyprus rumored to be worth about €1 billion. Hermes Airports have already signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese company. The Chinese company's proposal involves the creation of a large commercial showroom for Chinese products and also a logistical services centre. "The logistical centre will be based at the old Larnaca airport, and will constitute the bridge linking China to Europe, Africa to the Middle East," Mr Aspris who is Hermes spokesman said. "In effect, Cyprus will become a gateway for Chinese products to Europe, the Middle East and Africa." he added. The proposed project would create hundreds of jobs, hopefully increase the number of visitors to the island, and also attract managerial staff from Chinese companies whose products will be on display at the showroom. Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroudjiatis welcomed the news, saying he hoped the investment went ahead to help boost the town's growth. "We want to send out the message that it is time for Larnaca to achieve the growth that it deserves." he added. Should the project go ahead it is estimated that the nearby villages of Tersefanou, Kiti and Meneou will experience a substantial economic injection.

HONG KONG — Several disgruntled tourists from China were arrested in Hong Kong for assaulting an airport ground crew member. A flight bound to Beijing was delayed for several hours due to weather. Unhappy and impatient with the delay, several tourists from China began yelling at the ground staff in the Hong Kong International Airport. As though they could do something about the weather. Eventually tempers flared on both sides and when a female ground staff agent told a passenger NOT to start fighting, the man slapped her. When interviewed by the police the man claimed the ground staff agent had hit him and insisted that women needed to know when to keep their mouths shut. Good thing, the ground staff agent can’t control the weather, or she’d probably drop a 10 ton ball of hail on his head. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
